Well… I guess that’s it for now…

In case you hadn’t heard, Low Ding Zone had its last business meeting in December, and decided that after eight wonderful years, it was time to ride off into the sunset.

We’ve had a great time making unusual (and sometimes just plain weird) music, and an even greater time entertaining our audiences, and we thank you all for coming along for the journey with us.

We’ve learned a bunch of things over our existence:

  • Bass bells weigh just as much as ever. We might be having an easier time now, though, because of cartilage compression.
  • Making music is always an adventure. Personality has always been a bit part of that for LDZ, because one of our prime qualifications for membership has been “ham quotient”. We’ve thoroughly enjoyed endorsing chirocampanological mayhem because of that.
  • Stage names are part and parcel of the persona. “Towering Belle”, “Bottom Dweller”, “Bassonator”, and “Vi-Bassious” have been a few manifestations of such.
  • Just ‘cuz people say you can’t do it doesn’t actually mean that you can’t. There will always be naysayers… but remember, E3 is a gurlie bell because we ignored (some of) them. We’re still working on ignoring the others, by the way…
  • “Politically inappropriate” is not equivalent to “concert worthy”. Witness the Funeral Tango, the piece you can play for that person you “just had to send off”.
  • Professionalism is not the same as “stick in the mud” (or “sharp stick in the eye”, for that matter). We started with “move it or lose it, buddy!”, and continued that tradition without fail.
  • We’ll miss all of you. Maybe someone will assemble another bass-only handbell ensemble in the future, though – and our repertoire could be a possible jumping-off point for them. We’ll see!

Best wishes to all of you. We’ve had a great time being Low Ding Zone!

Ah, Summer!

Belated news…

Our “Silver Screen” murder mystery shows were a wonderful success and, as they say, “a good time was had by all”. Well… better than that! We had fun, we laughed, and our audience members even got to dance the Charleston!

We’re off for the summer now, but we’re planning next year’s shows! Come back here and check for news soon!

Tickets are available for our “Silver Screen” murder mystery shows!

Come one, come all! Get your tickets for our “Silver Screen” murder mystery shows. We’ll be collaborating with actors and having a great time by the LDZ Speakeasy (okay, it’ll be a snack dispensary…), and will give you the chance to solve a murder mystery.

We’ll have three performances: April 20/21/27, and tickets are $20 each. See our calendar for details and links to where you can buy your tickets online!

Summer Break!

Low Ding Zone is on summer break!

But… that’s from rehearsals and performances only, since we’re madly and wildly planning the 2012-2013 season! There’s a program to build and music to arrange… and lots of both! See you in the fall!

Concerts!

We’re coming up to the end of the 2011-2012 season quickly, and it’s full of gigs! The Handbell Ventures Open House will be April 15th, 1:30-4:30 p.m. at the Lucie Stern Ballroom (1305 Middlefield Road, Palo Alto, CA). There will be some music played, and you can also meet the ringers involved in the organization, as well as helping us deal with the amply supply of noshes there. You can also bid on silent auction items, and possibly take home something really exciting!

We have a concert at Hope Lutheran Church (2383 Pacific Drive, Santa Clara, CA) on April 28th at 7:00. We’ll be sharing the stage with the HLC Chancel Choir. The last time we were here, the house was full, so plan to be there early to get good seats! Admission is free, and a freewill offering will be taken.

We’re heading to Ashland, OR on the first weekend of May for the Siskyou Summit Handbell Conference. The concert will be in the evening on Saturday the 5th in the gym at Ashland Middle School, so you can spend the day checking out the happanings at the Shakespeare Festival, and then join us for some incredible handbell music!

“Insane Collaboration”

It’s good to be an “insanely collaborative” ensemble. I know that’s not for everyone – some directors/leaders/bosses (okay, and maybe “slavedrivers”) have a fundamental insecurity about letting the reins go free. But Low Ding Zone has found that to be a linchpin of identity – we thrive on it because we’re willing to respect each other’s ideas no matter how “out there” they happen to be.

Everyone has an idea. Some of us even have ideas that most people find they can appreciate. And then there are the rest of us – and so LDZ’s approach is more of a shotgun thing: Take ’em all into consideration, and see which ones make sense… or which can be made to make sense in our somewhat twisted part of the universe. 😀

Four Weeks to Go…

We still have lots of work to do to prepare for the concert(s?) in February. But at least we took care of most of the passages needing sectional work last week, and so we should be rolling along. A few pieces still have sections we need to nail down, though, so we’ll be giving those attention today.

And then.. logistics, program, etc.!
